Japanese-Inspired Moss & Plant Bowl
Step into the world of saikei-inspired design, drawing from the Japanese tradition of creating miniature landscapes with living moss, stones, and carefully selected plants. In this workshop, you will craft your own serene, natural scene in a wide, shallow bowl. Combining lush moss, small tropical plants, sculptural stones, and driftwood, participants will design a living “landscape” that evokes forests, hills, or riverbeds—all scaled down to a beautiful desktop display.
Through step-by-step guidance, you’ll learn the key principles of Japanese miniature landscapes including balance, texture, depth, perspective, flow, and composition, while also discovering how to care for moss and companion plants long-term. By the end, you’ll leave with a living artwork that brings a calming connection to nature.
Your workshop experience includes a large shallow bowl, living moss, 2–3 complementary plants, natural elements such as sculptural stones, driftwood or branches, optional sand, and soils. Enjoy a glass of wine or a non-alcoholic beverage as you create your miniature landscape.
